Development of methane fermentation system using local biomass resources

The concern for biomass resources has been increasing for global warming and fears of depletion of fossil resources. In Japan, a large amount of biomass resources are expected because of Japan’s temperate rainy climate. Japanese government also promotes the utilization of biomass resources for biomass-energy.
However, little biomass resources are utilized as energy, because the difficulty of gathering and handling of biomass. In addition, there are economically inefficient and delay of comprehensive systems for utilization of biomass resources.
Our local region, Niigata has a large amount of cellulosic biomass resources such as rice straw.  In this study therefore, to utilize the local cellulosic biomass resources for biomass energy, we are developing the glycation and methane fermentation hybrid system cooperating with local government and other research group.
